Second Presbyterian Church is an architectural and historical treasure. The present-day sanctuary was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw with the help of Frederick Clay Bartlett in 1900 in the Arts and Crafts style. Murals The sanctuary is covered in murals painted by Bartlett. The west wall depicts the Tree of Life from Genesis and Revelation and a procession of angels with medieval instruments in a starry sky. Baptismal Font The font (at left) dates from 1888. It was hand-carved in Florence Italy. It depicts Lilies and Lily of the Valley. Windows The church sanctuary has 20 magnificent stained glass windows, including one of the largest collections of Tiffany Windows anywhere. The church also has 2 extremely rare Edward Burne-Jones windows that were executed in the William Morris Arts and Crafts studios in England in the 1880’s. Please visit our window gallery. Celtic Cross The cross (at left) dates from 1957. Each side of the cross is different. It was made in Iona, an island off of Scotland, which is the home of ancient Celtic Christianity and is noted for its metalwork. Angels There are over 175 angels or representations of angels in the sanctuary of this church. As a result, efforts to restore and repair the church have been titled the Angels Fund. |
